Copyediting and proofreading give me the opportunity to be just a small part of an author’s creative journey and the ability to help talented writers perfect their work. Word on the Sheet was created because I am passionate about your writing and want to help you get your story or message across to its intended audience. As a writer who has spent hours, days, and weeks on your manuscript, it is not uncommon to miss errors in the words and pages you have put so much time and effort into creating. That’s where I come in! I will be your second pair of eyes to make sure that those pesky errors don’t distract from your masterpiece!

At this stage in the editing process, your work should have already been reviewed for overall structure, format, sentence flow, language, and style. A great book should go through all the editorial passes. If your manuscript has not been reviewed by a Development or Line Editor, below I have included links to assist you throughout this process.

Copyediting Services:

My copyediting services include checking for all the nitty-gritty inconsistencies and mistakes, including spelling and grammar and ensuring accuracy and consistency throughout. My comprehensive review includes:

  • Correcting errors in grammar

  • Correcting errors in punctuation

  • Correcting errors in spelling

  • Correcting errors in word usage

  • Correcting errors in spacing

  • Correcting typos

  • Correcting double words

  • Checking general information for accuracy

    • Narrative timeline: What’s your character’s age? As the years change in the story, does the age line up?

    • Quotations: Does the quotation match the original source? Is it correctly attributed?

    • Historical details: Are you sure it happened then?

  • Checking words for consistency

    • Did you capitalize Chihuahua on page 11 but not on page 57?

  • Examining organizational material and visual information, e.g., table of contents, callouts on illustrations for accuracy

  • Adhering to editorial style

  • Developing a style sheet (or following one that is provided) to track editorial style

  • Using editorial style for documenting sources, e.g., footnotes, reference lists

  • Ensuring table and visual elements remain consistent with surrounding text, e.g., heading style, numbering

  • Checking that material is complete and querying any missing information

  • Flagging areas where citations may be needed

  • Flagging copyrighted material

  • Fact-checking is another service I can provide as part of my copyediting services. (I love this part!)

    • Does your manuscript contain idioms? Would your character say, “What’s up?” in 1950?

    • Does your villain carry a pistol? Does that suppressor she’s using really fit that model?

    • Do you refer to television shows, brand names, songs? Is your character watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer in 1995? Wait, was Buffy around in ’95? Is your character a fan of The Walking Dead and talking about Daryl Dixon’s weapon of choice? Well, I hope it’s a crossbow! Is your character talking about their favourite song that doesn’t exist yet in the narrative timeline? Is your heroine wearing the signature Juicy Couture velour tracksuit before it launched?

In both fiction (if you are referencing real dates, fashion, art, entertainment, locations, and events) and non-fiction, ensuring that your facts are accurate is an important factor to deter your readers from getting distracted and losing interest in the story if something sounds and looks off to them.

Proofreading Services:

My proofreading services include checking for all those spelling and grammar discrepancies that are sometimes missed in previous editorial passes that are best caught by a fresh pair of eyes. My comprehensive review includes:

  • Correcting errors in spelling

  • Correcting errors in word usage

  • Correcting errors in spacing

  • Correcting typos

  • Correcting double words

  • Adhering to editorial style guide and sheet (if provided)

  • Looking over any visual elements and organizational information to ensure consistency and accuracy with surrounding text

  • Checking that material is complete and querying any missing information

If your manuscript is in its final intended format in a “page proof” (generally a PDF or hard copy), my proofreading services will involve making annotations to any problems I identify.  As well as identifying the errors above, the service will include a review to ensure all copy and elements are ready for layout and for specific layout formatting errors throughout the complete proof, including all front and back matter.

My Process:

For both copyediting and proofreading services, I ask for a writing sample of five pages from your manuscript, taken from the middle of the book, if possible, to evaluate the writing and what services are required. The preferred document format that I work with is a 12 pt, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 8½ x 11 inch page in Microsoft Word. I use the Track Changes feature to mark insertions and deletions, highlight errors, and add comments when appropriate. I use various reference materials, including The Chicago Manual of Style, Associated Press Stylebook, The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation, and The Best Punctuation Book, Period. I adhere to all standards from the style guide and writer’s or editor’s style sheet and can also work with any preferred or house style guide per request.

Whether you are self-publishing or going the traditional route, I am happy to work with a variety of genres, including suspense, thriller, mystery, self-help, memoir, young adult, and children’s literature. I am also happy to provide my services for various magazine articles, websites, and blogs.

If you are interested in my services, please view my base rates, and contact me for a quote. I look forward to working with you!
